Anyone else every bring a yeast starter to work with them???!!
I’m in the process of making a stirplate but dont have all the bits to complete it yet. I’m brewing this weekend so I made a starter last night. I was going to have my wife give the starter a swirl every so ofter today since today is usually her day off.
She got called in to sub and I wasnt sure if the starter would not be up to snuff if just left sitting still all day long so I brought to work with me!
Kg,
Love the dedication and commitment to a greater beer.
Leaving it home and an occasional swirl when you can is just fine until a stir plate is fashioned or procured.
You are increasing the cells/odds ever closer to optimal so any starter even never swirled is going to increase the beneficial aspects your seeking.
A good easy way to build a stir plate is to:
a. Use an old train controller with built in potentiometer which is simply the lever or dial used to stop or increase the speed of the model train. Also you can usually run leads directly to a fan-motor w/o a lot of wiring savvy.
b. A computer muffin fan.
c. hard-drive magnets or super-magnets.
d. project box.
I set these four things in place with super minimal effort and had a stir plate fully operational within minutes. Here is a few quick pics.
My only worry about it is that some may consider what you are bringing to work to be a beer. While we don’t necessarily think so, others may, some of them being your boss or HR. It doesn’t seem to be a wise decision. Sorry to not be the fun one, but in this day in age where people sue over coffee being too hot, you gotta think in this manner. Imaging losing your job over a yeast starter…
