Messed up sanitizing

I just brewed my third beer, the Bavarian hefeweizen and had been doing good until the kraussen started getting into my airlock. I had been watching so was prepared to put in the blowoff. Unfortunately I made a very amateur mistake. When “sanitizing” the blowoff tube, I accidentally pulled out a gallon jug of drinking water instead of the starsan I had in similar gallon jugs.

I caught this mistake two days later when preparing to sanitize the air lock again to put in the carboy. I’m wondering what the chances are that I ruined my beer? I’m hoping that I’ll get lucky since not enough touched the beer but who knows. If it is messed up will I know prior to bottling?

Thanks! I’m loving these forums so far and have brewed three batches in my first month of brewing! Now if I’d just learn not to store the leftover water next to my starsan!

2 words, black sharpie!

I will bet that you are fine. There could be some “nasties” in the water. You drink it and don’t get sick.

It will most likely take until a month or 2 in the bottle before you notice an infection if there is one. But you will probably have consumed it before then. Wheat beer are best young.

Unless your blowoff was filled with mold or something, I wouldn’t worry about it.

Good to hear, it’s actually my first time using the blowoff so it hopefully wasn’t too dirty. It got quite a nice soak in drinking water! Guess I’ll just have to drink my beers a little quicker after bottling.
