Local brews in DC?

Going to Washington DC and Arlington VA for a few days next week. Any recommendations on local brews to try?

If you have some time to kill, from Arlington a little over an hour away is Flying Dog Brewery. Go up for their tour and have a taste.

I’m not a big fan of most of the MD beers I’ve tried. Flying dog is a good choice. Your near Delaware as well so Dogfish Head. Heavy Seas is in the area, some people like it but I haven’t seen one I really like.

The best beer in DC, Foggy Bottom English pale ale and Vienna lager, died about 9 years ago.

I remember stocking my little studio apartment closest full to the brim once word leaked out.

There are a few Maryland breweries that should have product where you will be like Flying Dog, Full Tilt and DuClaw. Not a fan of most Flying Dog brews but the Truth is 1 fantastic DIPA and is super hard to find. DuClaw has some very solid offerings such as Neon Gypsy, Hop Continuum No.1 Blood Orange Gypsy and Sweet Baby Jesus to name a few. Heavy Seas offers some very mediocre beers but I do like the Black Cannon (black ipa). Full Tilt’s Baltimore Pale Ale and the Fleet Street Rasperry Wheat are pretty good and they introduced a couple IPA’s this year as well. As mentioned above Dogfish Head isn’t far away and will probably be on tap in every pub you visit.

How could I forget DuClaw, I should be ashamed. Yes they make some excellent stuff. I know some people don’t like them they seem to think outside the box and go for what some might call a desert or experimental style beer. IMO those are the best kind break the mold like Dogfish did back in the day.

Dogfish Head has a pub nearby in Falls Church and you will probably find it on tap in a lot of places. Another vote here for DuClaw and Flying Dog. Another Delaware beer to try would be (Old) Dominion (transplanted from VA). Their Gigi Farmhouse Ale, Morning Glory Espresso Stout and Double D IPA are some of my favorites. I live about half an hour north of the brewery but cannot get Gigi unless I take the brewery tour, and even then it’s in 5 oz samples. They said they mostly ship it to Annapolis and other MD locations so you may find some near DC. Their Candi Tripel is very good too.
