Heres what Im planning to do to test if a FWH addition comes through as a 20 minute addition to me.
Mash enough marris otter and a little crystal, maybe even add some corn sugar to the brew pots, to make a 5 gallon batch of best bitter style wort- ~1.043
Split equally between two pots.
Pot 1- East kent goldings at 60, EKGs at 20,
Pot 2- EKGs FWH, EKGs at 60,
**All hop additions are .5 Oz
I might add 0-5 minute additons to each but havent decided, i want to clearly see how much flavor/aroma FWH contributes but i also want the beers to be as good as possible. Suggestions?
The most important thing to me is that both of these beers are drinkable. Both stay within style guidelines as a Best Bitter for OG, IBUs, Color, and ABV. Pot one IBUs on the low end, Pot 2 IBUs on the high end when set to default FWH addition. This will tie up both of my fermentors but as long as they are drinkable ill have beer, results, and 2 starters of london 1968 ESB yeast, not bad
I think you have it right. If I really wanted to test it out I’d probably choose a style where hops are more prominent to get a clearer comparison (something like a BoPils, or maybe a Dusseldorf Alt). Also, WY1968 may not be the best yeast for doing a hop comparison since it tends to pull hops out a bit. Still, if this is a style where you’re considering using FWH in, then by all means go for it. Your methodology looks sound to me.
I FWHed all 3 recipes i designed all turned out great but i wanna get an idea impact they have for future recipes. I cant lager but i see your point, for experiment purposes even an APA would be better but ever since i started brewing a few months ago i realized i really enjoy “englishy” beers and had been missing out on until i started brewing. My most recent brew an ESB with FWH is one of the best beers ive drank, note ive said that about every beer ive brewed prior, but it is a great drinking beer.
Used liquid yeast for the first time on an american amber i have fermenting so my yeast knowledge is low. Any suggestions on a more hop forward engligh strain?
