I’ve done a couple of all grain 1 gallon batches and I was wondering if folks can help me figure out why my efficiency was low this time around. I did the brew in a bag method - brew water temp (1gallon) mostly at 156. It went down to 148 towards the end so I got it back up to 150 with some spare brew water at 165. I did my sparge by ladeling water at 165 (about .7 gallon) and then followed the rest of my boil recipe. The grains were 1 lb Belgian Pilsner, .8 lb Vienna malt, .25 lb wheat malt.
156 is to warm for a season IMO. 148 to 150 would be better for me anyway.
Thanks! Going to brew another batch today so will aim for 148-150
I’m not a BIAB person, but do you crush your own grains? I’ve had efficiency issues (not really issues, just need more grain) since I crush at my LHBS. I batch sparge in a mash tun and have been getting around 65% efficiency and couldn’t figure out why (pH was good, temp was good). I think it’s my crush at the store. Looking at maybe getting my own crusher.
I do crush them at the store. The quality of the crush has occurred to me before. I have been running the grains through the machine twice. I wonder if I should do a third round. I don’t think I have the room for my own at home. I did end up adding some DME to the boil and got a decent OG. I think I may go without the BIAB method the next time just to see if that helps too.
As always Nb Forum - thanks for the advice!
