Saturday I brewed a partial grain, everything was finished and in the primary. I went to check the temperature before adding the yeast and grabbed the end of the candy thermometer and actually crushed it between my thumb and forefinger. I stood there in disbelief holding the crushed glass and thermometer.
Now I don’t think much if any fell into the beer. I was planning on siphoning it into the secondary through a cheese cloth or maybe cotton balls. Anyone have any insight on how to save this batch?
It should all settle to the bottom. Keep your siphon off the bottom and rack carefully. Maybe leave half a gallon in the bucket, just to be sure. I broke a floating thermometer in a bucket once, and all the metal beads fell in. I racked everything off the top and was fine.
The glass will settle out on the bottom and racking carefully will ensure it doesn’t get picked up. Leave some extra beer behind just to make certain. I’d be more worried if any of the mercury got into my beer! That would be a drain pour for sure.
Ha! By no means do I have a Kung Foo grip. Just a cheap thermometer I guess! Luckily the inner glass holding the mercury didn’t break. Just the outter part.
