Expiration Date on Extract Kits

I bought a Caribou Slobber kit about a year ago and a Raspberry Wheat last spring. A mix of laziness and choosing to brew other beers has left these beers still in the box. Are they still good to brew being that they have been in the box for almost a year? Should I buy a new yeast packet for them and use the rest of the kit? Any advice/thoughts would be great. Thank you!

They will make beer, but I would always advise you to use the freshest ingredients possible. Old extract develops a “twang” with age, which can taste like cardboard, caramel, and banana. Fresher is better. Your yeast should be fine, assuming it is a pack of dry yeast – dry yeast lasts a very long time. Liquid yeast, not so much.

Thanks for the advice - I’ll give them a try and see what happens!
