Dry hop- pellet vs. leaf

will one produce more flavor than the other? I have a balck IPA that I will be dry hopping this week with cascade. I have a lb of each and am wondering which to use.

IME one will not give you more aroma than the other. The real issue is which one is freshest. That’s what you should use.

also, if using leaf, make sure to get some of the settled ‘dust’ in the bottom of the bag and/or mix up the bag before adding. Some of that ‘dust’ can be the broken down lupulin glands, which contain the bittering compounds (this is particularly important with th 60-minute additions).

Pellets just tend to me more consisent, where one pellet = another pellet

I prefer pellets as I was getting an earthy flavor from the whole hops which I found to be undesirable.

I haven’t noticed a significant flavor difference between the two. I prefer pellets simply because they suck up less beer.

From ANY whole hops, no matter the variety? I’ve just never found that, Greg, so I’m curious to try to identify whta might have been going on. What would you attribute it to?

All came from hopsdirect. Even whole Columbus in the boil made RIPA taste funny. Tasted like a muslin bag.

Man, that’s weird. I use muslin bags for dry hopping and I’ve never had that flavor.

Yea I don’t think its the bags as I use them with pellets in the Randall… Just weird all together. I will try them again next year.
