Does top cropping yeast diminish the batch it's from?

I have recently switched to buckets, and I am interested in doing top-cropping of yeast. I was wondering whether taking the best of the yeast out of the batch like this causes strain on the leftover yeast or leads to the same problems as underpitching might.

Just don’t take too much out and I think you should be fine. Personally I don’t think it would stress them too much because there is still a lot of them floating around.

You only need about 1/2 cup of top cropped yeast for a medium gravity 5g batch. The batch you pull from won’t even notice.
