Crystal Rye

Has anyone used Crystal Rye, or “Cry Rye” as the NB employee called it. He seemed to like it quite a bit, so I bought 2 pounds. I want to put it in a “Toffee IPA” 10 Gal Batch. I know it will mess with the color from but I am hoping to get that sweet toffee flavor. Am I overdoing it? I’ve never used this ingredient before.

Malt & Fermentables
92% 22 ~ Rahr 2-row Pale
8% 2 ~ Crystal Rye Malt

Hops
60 min 1 ½oz Apollo ~ pellet 18.0aa
30 min ½oz Apollo ~ pellet 18.0aa
15 min 1oz Styrian Aurora ~ pellet 8.1aa
1 min 1oz Styrian Aurora ~ pellet 8.0aa
total 67.7 IBU

Yeast
American Ale II

Sounds good, but that “may” be over kill. I myself make a Rye IPA using:

12 lb Maris Otter
2 lb Rye
1/2 lb Crystal Rye
1/2 lb C-20
1 oz Chocolate Rye

I get a nice deep amber color and decent malt body. Maybe start off using only 1 lb of Rye. Post the results if you do.
Good luck

I adjusted the recipe for 5 gallons keeping a high hop profile. It gave the beer a hop forward flavor, but a great toffee flavor. It is still a little green, but it is Great! The hop flavor is very Grassy flavor, it reminds me a lot of a Surly Furious, although not quite the same.
