cream ale

I just saw a differnt post on this type of ale. I’m thinking of brewing this
next, but I’m not sure of the style.

Is Boddington’s a cream ale ?

Thx,
John

Technically, no: I think that most folks would agree that Boddington’s is a “bitter” (a relatively mild but very tasty one, by my reckoning). Boddington’s is creamy however, since it is usually nitrogen dispensed.
‘Cream Ale’ is basically BMC style beer with a fancy name. I think, by most people expectations, it’s a light blonde ale with an emphasis on smooth flavor with nothing overpowering (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

In far more words the BJCP says is that it’s a lighter ale that’s been lagered.
And it can be made with either ale or lager yeast.
Some versions have even been a blend of the two types of beer. Also it can use a percentage of corn…or not.

In the real world, since there is no hard definition or requirement of what constitutes cream ale, it is really of course not much more than a marketing term in the end.
