Calibrating Temp Controller Probes

I was just talking to a guy in my club who just got (built) his first temp controller and is fermenting a wit @ 68 (so the controller says, probe insulated and taped to fermenter), but his temp strip says 72.

I told him that if there is one thing I have learned in homebrewing, it is that about 90% of all thermometers are completely inaccurate…especially ones that are $0.79 at a homebrew store.

However it did get me thinking (dangerous): does anyone calibrate their temp controllers or at least check them for accuracy with ice? I have a Johnson Controls unit, and have made close to 20 batches with it with great results.

Finding a thermometer that you trust to be accurate it the only way to tell.
