Broken hop taste buds?

So I really dove into trying alot of beers about 4 months ago…and developed a love for IPA’s…with two of my favorites coming towards the end of november…Stones Enjoy By and Lagunitas Little Sumpin’ Extra. A month later I tried them both again…and they tasted “off”…almost unpleasantly bitter. I haven’t had any sinus problems…so that hasn’t been fiddling with my sense of taste. I thought it might have been a new mouth wash that I started back in december…but have since discontinued use of it…and my taste buds are still broken. Has anybody else experienced this…or do I just have mental problems?

Could be something you ate or drank first. Beers could have been skunks. Could be anything. Try some different IPA’s and see.

I find when I get a bit dehydrated it really affects my taste buds. Drinking enough water?

Hydration level has stayed constant…and both times the beers were prior to any other food/drink. Even the Dead Ringer and Ruination I had last night didn’t taste the way I remember them.

My taste buds broke about 6 years ago after I had lung cancer surgery. They removed about 25% of my right upper lobe to remove the cancer tumor. After I healed up I went through 6 months of chemotherapy, that is when my tastes buds broke. I’m just now starting to enjoy hoppy beers again. I hope you don’t have to wait as long as I have to enjoy hoppy beers again. I was one of the unlucky non smokers to develop lung cancer.

Good Luck,
Jazzman

Hopefully you are still cancer free?

I have found if I take a break from real hoppy beers and then have something like hop stupid the bitterness will really stand out. It is almost like my taste buds get use to the bitterness. I drink beer on a rotation. Summer is a lot of IPA’s and winter is for stouts and porters. Come summer the IPA’s will beat up on me for a little bit, until my taste buds get back in tune with what the plan is.

UnsDeo, My last scans and blood work showed I’m cancer free. I’m lucky because in my past working days I was exposed to a lot of second had smoke and asbestos.
My taste buds are coming back and I feel good, getting ready to turn 73 in a couple of months.

Good Luck & Cheers
Jazzman

Sense of smell and sense of taste are in part shared by the same cranial nerve, the Olfactory nerve. Is your sense of smell likewise afflicted?

Differential diagnosis here includes thrush(fungal), sinus infection, medications especially antibiotics, and GERD ( reflux), unfortunately even neoplasia(tumor).

No gerd…did have a sinus infection in december which required two rounds of antibiotics…could definitely be a tumor though  sense of smell seems fine though…the ipa’s smell great just…don’t finish well. Probably just burned out.
