So the girlfriend just surprised me with a cruise up north to Canada this summer. Curious if anyone knows of some must see breweries in the Halifax area and St. Johns area?
Garrison Brewery in Halifax is good. Just across from the cruise terminal. The Heart and Thistle had good beers, too. Good menu, if I recall. Don’t bother with Alexander Keith’s. I don’t think they even brew there any more, and all you get is the tourist tour of the place. It’s a decent, regular beer, but don’t be confused with the India Pale Ale name! You can go to the beer mapping project for other breweries and brew pubs.
Going up to the Highlands at all? We did a couple weeks in the Maritimes a couple summers ago and drove all over. Great place! We liked the Highlands the best…camping, hiking, fewest people!
Not really sure what were doing up there yet just know locations, but i will definitely keep the highlands in mind!
If you’re willing to commit to the 12 hour drive you can hit up Unibroue Brewery
I may be wrong but didn’t Labatt/Annheuser take over control and start brewing it in Missouri (St. Louis)? I had a case of their brown ale and was dumbfounded by the nova scotia style insignia but it was brewed in St. Louis.
Just to clarify here, are you going to Saint John, NB, or St. Johns Newfoundland?
St. Johns NB, should have clarified.

Yes, It’s part of Labatt/Anheiser/In Bev. I’m sure it’s brewed in a few locations. The original brewery is in Halifax, but I’m not sure if they brew there any more. It’s just a good tourist spot if you don’t know much about beer and just want to learn about one of the oldest breweries in North America.
Propeller in Halifax makes a decent brew. http://www.drinkpropeller.ca/
As someone said Garrison is good too.
There’s one that just opened a few weeks ago that is more of a Belgian style called Bridge Beer.
For Saint John there’s one called Big Tide. It’s smaller in size but it’s not bad. http://bigtidebrew.com/
There are a good amount of pubs in both cities (considering the population of course) and port cities are usually interesting.
