Over the course of 3.5 years, I’ve broken two glass thermometers. I’m not sure I want to invest in a third. So my question to the brewing masses is: if money was not an option, which thermometer would you buy (or do you own) that you would suggest I pick up next?
After about 3 years of brewing, I’m still using a candy thermometer that clips on the side of my brew kettle. It was bought at Walmart on clearance for $1.50…wish I could find more…it’s been amazing! So, my answer…search the web for clip-on candy thermometers!
Thermapen. Hands down worth every cent. Keep your eyes peeled for an open box sale and don’t think twice about it. 3 second reads. ALWAYS dead on accurate. Rugged and waterproof. 'nuff said.
Most people will point you toward the Thermapen as the cure cancer, world hunger and male pattern baldness. I suggest there is a better alternative from the same company, because it costs the same with the same performance, but with a lot more flexibility because you can use different probes for different applications.
I got the cheaper Thermoworks model ($20) and it works really good. It says 6 second read time but I routinely get 3-4. Splash proof, easy to read and adjustable calibration.
