All Galaxy IPA

Hey guys. I’ve done a couple successful mini biabs and I thought I would give my own recipe a try. I know that I like Galaxy hops and that I want a beer with 65 ibu’s and 6.5 abv. I used another biab recipe as a template and came up with this. How does it look? My only question is about the crystal. I know there are many different levels of them. I want a nice hoppy beer but with a hint of sweet in the malt. If you could give me any suggestions I would love to hear them.

Maxi-BIAB Adjustments

IME, 30-min additions are kind of wasteful in that they don’t add much of anything besides bitterness - I would move them to FWH instead.

.5 oz of late hop addition isn’t much for an IPA. I would bump it up to at least 2 oz near the at or near the end of the boil. Also, at least an ounce dry hop, but probably more like 2.

I prefer much less crystal for an IPA, more like 5% instead of 15%. If you are looking for some more malt flavor you can try something like munich malt.

OK Guys I have switched gears a little. I can’t acquire Galaxy hops so now I’m going to use Citra. I have also decided to do a Smash brew. Is there any reason this one wouldn’t work? I just randomly chose 65 ibus and 6.5 abv because it seems beers with those numbers have a little bit of sweetness. Keep in mind this is a 2.5 gallon mini biab. Is that hop schedule ok?

That’s funny, I was going to suggest looking into galaxy availability before setting your heart on them. Citra should be fine with 100% MO. Sounds like a tasty SMaSH brew.

Although it went out awesome, for the next time I will bump the bitterness a little bit and drop out the caramel 120L to 4oz.

I did an all-Maris Otter barley wine last summer and was disappointed. It had a nice flavor, but was boring. Maybe one-dimensional. I’d recommend adding some other flavors to complement the Maris Otter.
