90 Minute Boil...change hop additions?

Since hop additions are based on utilization based on boil time, for a 90min boil, do you start the hop additions after 30 minutes to hit the 60 min schedule?

Hop utilization is not significant beyond the 60 min mark. If wanting to boil for 90 min, you can either start your additions 30 min in or at 90. Boiling for 90 will further decrease your final volume. Make sure you account for the loss.

I’ve wondered this too…so are you saying the effect of the bittering hops will not be significantly changed with a 90 minute boil vs a 60 minute boil?

yes it ups it. But not by much.

here is the same recipe the first with the 60 minute addition. Then the second with the 90. the IBU’s only goes from 52.8 to 54.4, only 1.6 ibu’s with the extra 30 minutes of boiling.

Personally if I do a 90 minute boil I still add bittering hops at 60. If you add them at 90, you will get a slight increase in utilization but as others have said its not much. Programs like beersmith will calculate this for you.
