Just got a six-pack of the 2013 Lagunitas Sucks. Last year was was fantastic, but I am not as impressed with it this year. Seems like the hop profile is drastically changed, with less citrus and more pine and funk. Anyone else had it yet?
I have, and it is everything I hoped for.
I have not tried it and definitely won’t after reading your description.
I don’t know if they have started brewing in the Chicago location yet, but I don’t trust any hoppy beers that have to make a cross-country journey.
Why is that?
If they’re stored properly during transport and handled correctly by local distributors, there shouldn’t be any issue with any beer traveling coast-to-coast–or overseas for that matter. Some breweries refuse to work with distributors who do not guarantee the right handling procedures. I believe Stone was one that I read took this position.
I just checked on Beer Advocate and looked up the Nov 2011 reviews versus the Jan 2013 reviews. I was not having a brain fart. The Winter 2011 version was described as a citrus bomb, while the current Jan 2013 incarnation’s aroma is described as piney, earthy, with marijuana notes. The base is the same, but the hop profile is not. Still a great beer, but not what I had been anxiously waiting over a year for.
I got a BIG pineapple (not pine) note from this year’s version.
They’re not brewing in Chicago yet. I tried the Sucks this year and thought it was excellent, went back for more. What a great brewery this is - so happy their stuff is readily available and reasonably priced all the way over here in Milwaukee, WI.
thats fantastic, I’ve never heard anyone describe a beer having “marijuana notes”. Dont get me wrong, I have definitely tasted beers that tasted that way- i get it in the nose sometimes, Ive just never heard anyone refer to that aroma that way.

Usually referred to as dank
I have not had the “sucks” yet but I did just try the “Little Sumpin Sumpin” for the first time and it was fantastic! I found it to be quite citrus-y. I will have to give the “Sucks” a try next.
