1st hops harvest

I just dried out my first hops harvest. They were second year vines, and I got enough to cover one window screen.

My question is, how picky do I need to be on which ones to use? There are many that have brownish leaves, some that have been eaten by bugs, small ones, big ones, etc. They definitely don’t look perfectly green and uniform as they would from a commercial purchase.

Can I just throw them all in, or should I be choosy? I plan to dry hop a basic pale ale with them,


Oh, and they smelled a little funky while they were drying. If I crush the cones they smell great, but without crushing them they smell a little fishy.

Avoid the brown ones for sure.
