2006 Hop Harvest (pic)

by Boxerbug » Wed Sep 06, 2006 7:44 pm

I harvested my hops yesterday, dried them, and vaccum packed them tonight.
All in all I was pleased with there progress this year.
This is what they looked like before I packed them:

These are Cascade hops that started out as rhysomes from NB this spring
I started out with 8 oz before I dried them. I ended up with 2 oz all said and done. I am excited for next year, as I hear that they produce a lot more after they establish a root system.

If anyone is interested in using these in a brew, please let me know.
I am unfortunately out of the brewing business for a while, so I have no use for them. I would be happy to have them go to good use.

That would be great. I still can't believe that I was able to dehydrate 6 oz of water out of them. When I picked them they seemed awful dry.

Those look beautiful!

I'd use them if you wouldn't mind them going to a newbie extract brewer! I'm all about fresh ingredients.

I don't know if its feasable to ship bottles of beer, but I would be glad to send you the brew when I was done.

Since you started it.... here is my 2006 hop growing page.

I am going to put them into ziplock freezer bags tonight. I don't have a vacuum sealer, but I don't plan on keeping them super long.

Boxerbug: I suggest that you put them in your freezer. Cascade only looses about 14% of it's AA in a year when frozen and vacuum packed, so it will keep in usable condition for a long time.

Thank you for posting your pictures, guys. I found them very helpful. I planted my hops in the spring of 2006, so I was unsure of exactly when to harvest. I chose to harvest on Saturday. My first year cascade hops had a good year - 11 1/2 ounces that dried down to 2 5/8 ounces. My first year centennial didn't do so well - 1/2 ounce that dried down to 1/8 ounce. I'm not too worried about the centennial - they grew a lot, just didn't produce many cones.
