"need" hi-temp tubing in a mash tun?

by donosborn » Sat Jun 11, 2005 3:11 pm

Ugh. Sorry guys. I feel so needy right now, all my newbie all-grain questions. I'll be up and running soon...

I was able to get my normal (non hi-temp) 3/8" tubing through my Rubbermaid cooler spigot, but for the life of me I can NOT get my hi-temp 3/8" tubing through it because it is a little thicker (outer diameter).

My question is, am I ok to use a little bit of my non hi-temp 3/8" tubing for the part that will go into the cooler and into the braided hose? I would use my hi-temp stuff on the other side of the valve. I talked to a couple guys at NB and they thought this should be ok.

My other option would be to get some hi-temp 1/4" tubing for that inner part. But both of the NB guys thought that might be a little too restrictive for the flow. Agree?

This should be my last question on putting together this mash tun! :?

thanks again

You should be fine for now... not optimal but acceptable. The minimal contact should not impact any flavors. Just get that first batch going there!

Went through the same experience e months ago when I swithched to AG. I still want to replace my rubber bung into my coller with brass or SS, but that is on the list. I don't worry... the results have been more than worth the effort. 8)

I don't use the hi temp. tubing and I've never seen a problem by not using it.

I used non-hi-temp tubing for the inside-the-cooler part, and then hi-temp after the valve.

It's nothing unlike a lot of your mash tuns out there, but here it is:

Hopefully I'll take it for a test drive in a week or so.

I put a few gallons of water in it and it is NOT leaking, so that is good.

THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO HAVE ANSWERED MY PERSISTENT QUESTIONS!

Way to go, Don! Take it for a spin and see how it works. It'll be fun.

I used the hi temp stuff because 1) it's what I had for mash runoff on my prior tun and 2) I thought it was a good idea since I had it. I don't recall having any thoughts about it being necessary  (does that mean I wasn't thinking  ). I had to cut it diagonally into a pretty good taper to thread it through the spigot. It must be pretty close to the right size 'cuz it wasn't that hard to pull it through at that point.

Hope it works for ya! Here's to Adventures with AG Brewing! :D :D
