Used Keg Procurement

Hi All,

My Name is Derek, I am currently an extract / partial mash brewer and am looking to set up my all-grain setup. I have it all planned out and I thought I would get the hardest part out of the way first.

I am looking for used / decommissioned / damaged / whathaveyou 1/2 bbl (15.5 gal) kegs (3 to be exact) to convert into my HLT, MLT, and brew kettle. I have called homebrew stores, which led me to liquor stores, which led me to the distributors, which led me to the breweries themselves, and to no avail. I'm looking for any and all information on the subject of procuring kegs (legitimately) and any help is greatly appreciated! Is this a worthwhile search?

Thank you all in advance for your time.

Anything in the Minneapolis / St. Paul area is greatly encouraged!

Re: Used Keg Procurement

You could try probrewer.com classified, they tend to have that sort of thing. Ebay also of course, but you never know what the kegs were really used for. Also try nabs (just google "nabs brewing".

Everyone will say be ethical but I say to hell with it; get some full ones have a big party then keep the kegs. I was thinking about doing that but my neighbor had two that she couldn't return cause the the tags were ripped off. I got them from her and I'm still working on them.

Re: Used Keg Procurement

I got a few that were left over from a party. A few drunken college football players decided it would be a good idea to see who could hurl them over the power lines  needless to say the skirts got pretty bent up and the distributor refused them... so I ended up with them.

I got mine from a party, also. Is it ethical? Probably not, BUT You are charged a deposit for a reason even though it may not cover the cost of a new one (that is debatable on cost to manufacture vs. the number of times it is used).

You have to decide how you feel about it.

Re: Used Keg Procurement

I got mine for free on Craigslist. A couple had purchased a foreclosed home and they were in the garage, they had tried to turn them in and tried to take them to the recycler, both turned them down. But, I was glad to take them off their hands!

Wow, thanks for all the input guys! I'll let you know what I end up finding and where, at least for posterity's sake.
