simple lager

Postby banjobrew on Tue Nov 03, 2009 2:12 pm

7.5 lbs 2 row
.5 lbs CaraPils
1 lb maize (flaked)

mash at 122 for 20 min, 153 for 60 min, 170 for 10 min

1.5 oz sterling 60 min
.5 oz sterling 0min

Saflager S-23

10 days at 65 degrees 6 weeks at 35 degrees

Do you think this would make a decent 5 gallons of beer? I have the 2 row and Sterling (have a dried pound from my own harvest). I use the Saflager because my cellar stays about 65. I brewed the NB pre-prohibition lager a couple months ago and it came out great.

What do you think will be the change from the NB kit which used 6 row and cluster?

Thanks,
John

I think your primary at 65 degrees is the biggest red flag. I'd shoot for 55, or 50 if I could get that low.

I read the post on Saflager 23 but I've liked the results at 65 and I can't yet invest in a temp. controller. yet

What about the change from the NB pre prohibition kit which used 6 row and cluster?

You can easily maintain 50°F in a swamp cooler.

Sterling is a great hop, and I don't care for the flavor of 6-row, so from my perspective those are some good changes.
Beer is like porn. You can buy it, but it's more fun to make your own.
