I exchange my tanks at Minneapolis Oxygen Company, not too sure if they do refills to get your same tank back though. I've also exchanged tanks from Toll gas but they are more expensive. I have only exchanged my tanks so I can't help you if you aren't looking for that.

How much do they charge for an exchange?

About $17 for 20lb, $15 for 10lb.

I would 2nd MPLS O2. They appear pretty reasonable, although last time I was in they gave me a tank that was unbelievably heavy. Not a big deal as I'll be giving it back shortly.

If you are exchanging, you can do 02 co., or go to any praxair outlet. I have several brand new aluminum tanks and want to keep them for myself. For c02, i go to All Safe on Washington Ave in Minneapolis. For beer gas I go directly to praxairs big facility in Roseville. Both of these places will fill as you wait. Be sure to call or check hours before going though, if my memory serves me correct you better be to both by 3:30 or 4:00. Good luck.

I guess I'm too lazy - if it is a 5# tank - and mine is - I take it to Northern Brewer and swap. They are open 7 days a week (in case you discover a leaking keg on Saturday AM :( ), and you don't have to think about getting the tank hydro-statically tested when the date comes up (that costs money too, not sure how much though.) I cried and whimpered when I gave up my shiny new tank to NB, but I quickly got over it when I got home a poured a cool one and realized that shiny or scratched up - they both push beer the same.

Cheers - BT

Toll Gas isn't only the most expensive, but also the lowest in customer releationships.

Used them for work once and was not satisfied with anything

Agreed, you can go to zipps liquor and exchange a CO2 tank that they get from toll gas cheaper than it is to go to toll directly. I think they just rip off the common folk.

Zipps does C02 exchanges? I'll have to remember that for future consideration, since they're about 2 miles from my house.

Midwest Homebrewing does exchanges on 5#, 10#, 15# and 20# tanks... and when I exchanged my 20# tank there I ended up with a much nicer one then I gave them.

I've also used Minneapolis Oxygen Company, and would recommend them to anyone.

Re: Minneapolis Brewers: Where do you fill CO2?

I've dealt with the people at Midwest on a CO2 exchange once... And will never step foot back in that store again.

I brought 2 aluminum containers for exchange.. They were out of aluminum so they tried to give me steel ones. Of course there isn't a difference, but once you have steel - no one will exchange them for aluminum. Not to mention they leave rust rings if inside a fridge.

I asked the employee @ MW for a note or something that said if I came back in next time I could get aluminum for the steel ones he was giving me. No dice..

With a smile on my face, I commented that "there is a reason I shop @ NB" - grabbed my tanks, drove to St. Paul. 10 min later I walked out of NB with 2 aluminum tanks.

I've had good luck getting filled at OSC on Pierce Butler. Still have my original aluminum tank from NB, and i'd like to keep it that way!

Weber and Troseth on University/Prior in St. Paul will fill on premises. Just under $14 for a 10lbs tank.
