CO2 bottle w/siphon tube

by jpersec » Tue Mar 24, 2009 5:11 pm

Can I use a CO2 bottle with a siphon tube in a keging system? I am a chemistry teacher and I have this bottle so that I can make dry ice for my lab. Will pulling the liquid co2 off of the bottom of the tank cause problems with the regulator or cause problems in the beer? Anyone have any experience with this or knowledge? Thanks!

I think the liquid co2 could cause problems. I think you would have a good chance of pulling liquid co2 through the regulator and that is going to really throw off your pressures. The best thing I think you could do is get a smaller bottle and fill it from your tank with the siphon tube.
Bottled: Amarillo Honey ale, Rochefort 8 Clone
Kegged: Irish Red
On Deck: Kolsch, Vanilla Porter

Hey jpersec,
Welcome to the board..!
As hlitton said, the liguid co2 will cause problems with your regulator. If the tank is empty, you can pull the valve and then remove the dip tube. It would be very easy to do that..

If the tank is full, turn the tank upside down and secure it 'very well' so that it cannot fall and use it that way until it is empty and then pull the valve and remove the dip tube.

Or, as hlitton suggested, use it to fill a smaller co2 cylinder... i.e. A paint ball 20 oz tank. There is a ton of info about paint ball on this site.. You can do a search to get lots of ideas. Or... - ask back here in this thread..

thanks for the reply. I need to the siphon tube in my tank because I need to still use it to make dry ice for my lab. I am interested in the 20oz paint ball tank idea. Can you point me to where I can find what parts I would need to fill them from my tank and use them to carbonate my beer? Thanks!!

You will need a paintball refill station and a scale. This place is one of many available:
http://kegman.net/paintball/pbrefiller.html#co2
They also have the tanks:
http://kegman.net/paintball/pbcylinder.html#ccly

You will also need to adapt a co2 regulator to the paintball tank. This MicroMatic forum thread has the links and information that you can use:

I hope this helps you...
