Re: do i cut hops plant back before winter?

IMO, you can do either, it does not have any effect on the plant.

I leave mine up for winter appeal,
others trim at ground level to clean up.

BTW, mulch is good.

I've got a couple first year plants in a shallow bed of soil in a barrel planter, should I be doing anything to protect them over the winter?

I grow mine on metal fence panels for the most part,
and I find that if I let the bines sit there through the winter
they get really brittle and are easy to clean off in the spring.

Yup, come spring my crowns are trimmed.

I have had a few in pots that were above ground freeze solid and were mush come spring.

If you live in a cold area, you may think about mulching to give some thermal protection.

Yeah, that's what I do. I'm too lazy to get to it in the fall, so I put it off for as long as I can.

would it be alright if (gently) dug them up and wintered them in a plastic planter indoors?

I know I should just put them in the ground eventually but I didn't have the space this season.

I have not tried that, but it should work.

One thing to keep in mind is to keep them in a pretty cold place,
that does not freeze hard (garage?).

You don't want to trick them into thinking it is spring
and start to pop prematurely.

I cut mine back to the ground and put a shovel full of compost/manure, mulch and a sprinkle of fertilizer on them. These are my first year hops. They were just tiny twigs when I planted them, but they really grew well. Looks like a got a good root system for next year. I can't wait to see how they do! :)

I cut them back in the fall so I don't have to deal with them in the spring. I don't really think it matters much either way.

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping for. I gave them plenty of TLC and fertilizer that promotes root growth and plant vigor. I think it may have payed off. I can't wait till spring to see what happens.
