American Sake Breweries

Postby yoepus on Tue Nov 03, 2009 10:15 am

As far as I currently know, there are 5 breweries in America producing sake:

Folsom, California - Gekkeikan Sake : http://www.gekkeikan-sake.com

Forest Grove, Oregon - Momokawa / Sake One : http://www.sakeone.com/

Hollister, California - Ozeki Sake http://www.ozekisake.com/

Berkley, California - Takara Sake http://www.takarasake.com

Minneapolis, Minnesota - Moto I : http://www.moto-i.com/

Anyone have any additions to this list?

There are more than that, and most of what you've listed are the foreign-owned-and-operated breweries! Why'd you leave out SakeOne? They make some of the best sake I've ever tasted, and they have the distinction of being the first American owned and operated sake brewery in the world.
Primary: Huang Jiu
Secondary: Fallen Apple Brown Ale
Bottled: You're a-Peein' Pils, Deschain House Ale
Make some sake.

I was hoping if there are more people can add to the thread...

The interesting thing I learned, in the 90s there seemed to be a lot more breweries in the USA than there is today.

Sake One is Momokawa Brewery, and they are there in my list. I think the first american owned sake brewery was actually back near the turn of the 20th century in Hawaii. It was owned by a Japanese American however. As I understand however, Momokawa is half owned or owned in part by a mid-sized Japanese brewing company too.
