A buddy forwarded this to me to ask me what I thought of the 'clone' recipe. Although close it doesn't seem right to me. So I sat down with a can of furious, this recipe and all my 'cloning' gadgets.

I do understand that some Surly brewer helped with this so take all this with a grain of salt. I very much could have picked up the phone and asked Todd about this but Im very much against doing that. Frankly I would hate it if someone did that to me. If someone got it right by experiment then good on them.

So here are my problems with this recipe:

1. Its not dark enough. I used my colormeter and Furious seems about 15srm NOT 7.
2. That amount of light munich wouldn't seem to give it enough of that Munichy character that I get out of furious. Its tastes more of the caramunich to me. This however could be a greater amount of munich with a darker crystal malt. The 55L stuff doesn't give those deep chewy flavors unless used in high quantities but then you get a ton of caramel sweetness which I don't get out of Furious.
3. FG and crystal amount. Ive used golden promise and munich extensively for years now. Ive mashed them for single infusions and triple decocted them. The thing I've found is that with any of the mashing schema, I've still been able to get a very good finishing gravity. Testing the fg of surly makes it about 1.014 (~8brix measured). This data with the color and attenuation of the yeast indicates that they amount and type of crystal malt is along the lines of what Im thinking.
3. There are 4 hops used in Furious, not 3. The bitterness is too sharp to be 100% Magnum IMO. Tastes more like Warrior or Zeus.
4. There are about 3.25lbs/ bbl of hops used in Furious, this recipe has only 2.3. More hops at the beginning can't be done as it ups the IBU's way out of range. The dry hopping looks right as its about 1.25#/bbl which is quite a high amount as is. Plus the flavor is not just hoppy but 'hops' with all the resins and such. 2oz wont give you that.

As i said before, this recipe is based on what I tasted in the beer and off the stuff that I know and could find out. Take it for what its worth but it does seem to be much more spot on. This recipe may be complete crap...but I would bet otherwise.

FWIW, Midwest does not call it a clone, I just made that assumption based on the name of the kit and the fact they worked with Surly brewers.

They do. Its under their 'clone' section and the dude who sent me the recipe was in their shop and was told, 'This is our new Furious clone'.

when i bought it i was asuming that since the brewers helped them make the recipe, it has to have some stuff left out.
i just racked and dry hopped mine, so it'll be a bit before i can get a good taste.

Nope. Ask a lot of the more experienced guys about making recipes. You don't need to taste the exact recipe to get an idea of what it does. If you have somewhere to start it makes it all the more easy. So if Im cloning a beer and I have the ingredients, color, hops, alcohol, etc I can do the rest. If I only have the ingredients then I can always send the beer off for testing which will allow me to taylor the beer to ever more astringent numbers.

Well, let me express my sincerest thanks for the help with the clone recipe. Hope to be all grain by Christmas, so this will be high on the list. Surly Furious is pretty incredible.

my batch of the extract kit is bottled and starting to finish. i've tried one or two bottles with friends and we agree it is very similar to furious. mine came out almost spot on for color and the aroma is almost the same also. If i drink one on a day that i have not had any of the real stuff, i might be fooled. i ended up with about 4.2 gallons of beer, and honestly, i added half cup of brown sugar and a half cup of white sugar, so that might explain the darkness and the extra boozieness(not in a bad way).
however they came up with the kit, i think they got it pretty good, might not be the same ingredients and all that, but it does end up with a close finished product.
i still havent gotten to the all grain version, but its on my list.

Mashweasel,

How long would you dry hop your Furious clone for? I brewed your version today and was wondering what you thought. Thanks.

4-5 days. Any long than that you get a bunch of vegetal grassy flavors.

Not saying that this is an exact clone but..

Following some of Mashweasel's receipe and using what I had on hand...
It tastes similar to Surly, which I adore. Mine is not as flavorful or aromatic but the base has been established, for me. It needs more flavor and aroma additions.

All in all VERY tasty and a good first attempt.
Use it if you want.

Good Luck

Brewed MashWeasel's recipe for this last week, so I pulled out a sample last night to see how it was coming along. OG was right on at 1.060, after a week we're down to 1.022. Still some time to go there, but the smell, the taste, are amazing, and the color is pretty much spot on. A few more weeks for cleaning up and dryhopping....

Thanks much for the recipe - it rules. Now then.... when's the Bender (or more importantly Coffee Bender :) ) Clone recipe thread starting?
