Stainless Steel 304 vs 316

Yesterday I received several 1/2" 304 Stainless Steel fittings for free. I didn't really need them but its hard to pass up free. All of the fittings that I have on my brew setup are 316 including my ball valves. Is anyone using 304 SS? I know that 316 SS is substantially more resistant to corrosion. Just curious if anyone has had any issues with the 304 SS.

Re: Stainless Steel 304 vs 316

316 is more corrosion resistant, but it doesn't matter for the types of chemicals we have in brewing. For instance, with 316 you'd be better suited for making bleach or paper, or if you are in a very salinic environment (like marine applications). For making food, however, it just doesn't matter.

FWIW, I'm betting that if you have a SS brewpot it is 304. 304 is the standard for the restaurant and dairy industry. That's what I've got, and haven't seen any corrosion so far.

Re: Stainless Steel 304 vs 316

I use converted kegs and you are right they are 304SS. The reason that I chose the 316SS was that most of the 304SS fittings that I've found have a very rough finish to them and are not high polished like the 316SS fittings are. Probably more for looks than anything else. Plus, all of the 304SS fittings that I've found are not seamless. Seamless gives a nice tight fit when welding fittings into things like welding couples into kegs. Didn't figure that I'd have any problems with the 304SS fittings but the 316SS sure looks alot better. I guess if I would have done some more research I would have known that kegs are made from 304SS. Thanks
