How long does malt syrup stay fresh

How long does Northern Brewers malt syrup stay fresh after you open the container? Also is there anywhere else to get it cheaper or is Northern Brewer the cheapest?

Re: How long does malt syrup stay fresh

I have no idea how long it will last once opened. Probably not very long... I'd refrigerate and use it asap. As for getting cheaper extracts, I doubt you can get it much cheaper. Unless you buy in bulk.

Are looking into buying one of the 33lb jugs?
There are several people on this forum that do that. I think they refridgerate that whole jug and will pour a some cheap vodka onto of the extract to keep any nasties away after opening it, a 1/4" layer of vodka or so. I'm sure if your careful with your procedures it would last 2 months after opening. As for price Im not sure who has the best price.

Re: How long does malt syrup stay fresh

It's best to plan your brews so you don't have any left over syrup. Easiest way to do that is buy some bulk dry extract, and use it instead of any "partial cans" that you would have needed to get the recipe right. Dry costs more than the syrup, but it stores much better. Double bag it in ziplock bags to keep ALL moisture away from it. When substituting, use 12 oz of dry for each pound of syrup you would have used.
A clever/funny quote goes here.

Primary: Beer, wine or empty
Secondary: Beer, wine or empty
Bottled/Kegged: Beer, wine or empty
