Re: how to tell if a keg is stainless steel or not

Do you have a magnet? If it sticks it should be SS if not its Aluminum. Plus on the bottom of the keg they usually stamp some sort of number on it like 304 or something for the type of SS... But the magnet trick should work... I think

Put your beer down

400 series is magnetic not the 300 series.

Most stainless is not magnetic. Lots of pissed off house wives cause the magnets they use on their refrigerator doors to hold up their kids drawings do not work!

Re: how to tell if a keg is stainless steel or not

This comes up once in a while and I am not sure any beer kegs are aluminum. The weight should be a tell tale. Pick up a SS cook pot sometime then a similar aluminum. The weight difference is noticeable. I don't think aluminum, unless it was very thick would hold up to the beating kegs get.

I see that there are plastic kegs now but they wouldn't make good brew kettles

Re: how to tell if a keg is stainless steel or not

I work with all different types of stainless steels for a living and I can say quite positively that your keg will not be magnetic whether it is stainless or aluminum. Most food-grade steels are 316, sometimes 304, both which contain too much nickel to be attracted to a magnet. Like somebody pointed out earlier, the best way to tell if you can't tell by sight, weight, color, is to knick it with a grinder and see if it shoots sparks. I would think it would be marked somehow but then again I might know a lot about metal but practically nothing about kegs so...
What are the pros and cons of aluminum vs SS kegs?

Um, if there are in fact aluminum kegs. Just read the post above mine. I could swear I've seen aluminum kegs before.

My bad... I though 300 ss was magnetized... i know it has ferrite in it... Must not be enough to attract...

Sorry to the OP if I mislead you.
