Hop yard spring cleanup

Well, the sun is finally shining in New York after a long cold winter, and I had an hour a few days ago to start working on the hop yard. Cascades already have shoots. I found a few cones on the ground from last year. I couldn’t help but picking them up, rubbing them between my fingers and smelling the aroma. Amazingly enough, the cones still had aroma, and it wasn’t terribly oxidized. After all the snow, rain, wind and cold, I’m surprised there’s any lupulin left, but there it was between the bracheoles and still yellow. Tough little sacks of goodness, I suppose.

If we think to yesteryear, how did those peeps store hops? No super suckers, plastic baggies or the such… Brews were brewed into spring, I’ll bet even close even into the beginning of summer! Sneezles61
