BBQ competition and homebrew competition. Judging begins at noon Saturday July 16. The public is allowed in at 3 PM to sample BBQ, homebrew and live music. About 700 attend. The BBQ competitors provide meat samples, and the homebrewers provide homebrew samples. The event goes until dark, when the public moves on and homebrewers pull out the beers they want to use to impress each other. We usually potluck a late dinner around a bonfire. In 2015 we had over 30 lbs of leftover BBQ to sample from.
The event actually begins Friday night with a dinner for competitors and volunteers. There is unlimited camping space, free firewood, water and porta potties. The BBQ competitors roast and smoke all night. Make this into a relaxed camping weekend for yourself.
This is the event that was shut down in 2013 by Alcohol and Gambling Enforcement, prompting the successful effort to change the homebrew law during the 2014 legislative session.
The event is hosted by the Deer River Chamber of Commerce. Homebrew competition instructions and forms are on the web site: If you want to judge, we have a need.
