2013 Gardens

I like FEDCO seeds - a lot of what they offer does well in Northern climates, and I 'm a Northern gardener. Prices are good and their catalog is always fun to read.
Baker Creek has tons of interesting and rare varieties and their catalog is full on veggie porn. Glossy. You’ll know what I mean if you’ve seen it. I’m ordering from them for the first time this year.

I also enjoy Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. Lots of great seeds to choose from. Plus, their Mansfield MO headquarters is just a short drive from me.
Going to be starting seeds this weekend. Can’t wait!

We ordered all of our seeds from Baker Creek as well. Can’t wait to get started!

We ordered a bunch of seeds from Baker Creek last year, and they were great. Their catalog is cool too. But what’s up with the weird old guy in the jail cell and stripes, holding the giant squash and leering at the camera? That picture gave me a weird feeling… what is that guy planning for those poor squash?

Which seeds are you starting? We’re going to start some onions this weekend. I read that seed-started onions are better keepers in the root cellar.

Started my pepper plants over the weekend.

I was starting to stigger around in the garden, poking my finger in the soil
and thinking I could plant a few seeds out there.

Then it all got covered with another 6 inches of snow
so I am back to my seed catalog in front of the fire.

Baratone, are you going to sell your goods again this year?

Hopefully, as long as the garden produces.

I have tried donating produce to several of the food pantries in my area, but none seem to be willing to accept homegrown produce. :?

so far quite ahead of the season. vineyard pruned - needs fine prune tweaking, some lettuces and cabbages and scallions and peas in.750 onions going in this weekend. leeks up - garlic coming up nicely. strawberries thinned and 2 new beds planted and flowers on many of them. 1/2 of the fruit trees and berries pruned and done. seeds and green house have to be planted and cleaned and arranged and harvested from winter activity. garden all tilled - still needs another go. so - I am quite pleased. got the bales of straw out from around the chicken coop this AM. Hoping to have a good year.

It’s still too cold here to do anything outside. The low temps will be in 20’s all week with highs in the 30’s. Jeez. I’ll just have to wait it out, just like I do every year.

The first thing I Like to sow is peas, love eating fresh, sweet raw peas straight from the pod.
Along with radishes and lettuce around the peas.
This is a cold weather crop that will be over in time to plant the warm weather crop in the same bed. The peas will add alot of nitrogen to the soil and I’ll take advantage of that.
I’m thinking swiss chard and kale.

actually planted 63 potatoes today. some lettuce and cabbage and chinese cabbage is in as of this past weekend.

Green beans, 2 kinds of corn, squash, cucumbers, green, red, and yellow bell peppers, jalapenos, sweet banana peppers and 6 varieties of tomatoes all planted last weekend.

Spent the weekend doing my final tilling and getting a few final touches done on my garden. Should be planting within a week or two.

Planted the first round of the cold weather stuff, lettuce, spinach, peas, carrots, etc.

Will plant tomatoes, squash, green beans, etc in a few weeks.

Rows marked, soaker hose ran. Potatoes, squash, onions, and radishes planted. Should have everything in the ground by the end of the week.

I have some seedlings going in the basement, and I’m very anxious to get out and get digging. BUT, Minnesota weather is seriously messed up. Last year, it was 80 degrees in March. Now we’re getting pounded with snow. We got 9 inches last Thursday, and there should be another 4-6 inches tomorrow night. So I guess things even out in the end.

Since gardening is out of the question right now, I’ve been making maple syrup with a buddy. So far, we’ve made just over 3 gallons. We should end out the season this coming weekend with another 2 gallons of syrup. I’ll post a picture of the sweet syrup rig on the DIY forum soon.

My first order of business this year is to dig up all of my hops and renovate the hop yard. I’m going to space the crowns out a bit more and cut the crowns back. I’m sure it will be a hellacious undertaking, but I’m looking forward to it. I love working in the garden!

May have to end up replanting the whole thing. We got just a “little bit” of rain in the Chicago suburbs and I’m sure some of my plantings got messed up.

Here in MN, our spring has finally arrived. We had fresh snow a few days ago, but today we’re at 70 degrees and I got my first glimpse of the garden. I’m going to get some cold weather crops rockin’ right away. We’ve been craving kale all winter long!

Raked the straw off the strawberries and I was glad to see some new leaves. No hops shoots yet, but they won’t take long to pop up.

Whew! I thought winter would never end!

The corn is now almost 6 feet tall, green beans are everywhere, cucumbers are forming and I have a few 4-5 inches long, jalapeneos are 4-6 inches long as well as the sweet bananna peppers. The bell peppers are looking good and getting big, and the squash is just going crazy! Tomatoes are starting to get really big and starting to flower so they will not be far behind everything else.

So far everything is looking great! I hope it stays that way.

Wow, no one gardening since 14 May? We need some harvest pics in here.

I replanted some fall stuff recently, lettuces, spinich, carrots bok choy…summer is going fast.

I just have a small raised bed, but its been doing well. Tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, mint, oregano
